The opening ODI produced contrasting phases for both teams. South Africa were reduced to 29 for 2 before Matthew Breetzke and Marco Jansen launched a stunning recovery. Breetzke struck 112 from 106 balls, while Jansen hammered 75 off 59, with their 107-run sixth-wicket partnership steering South Africa to 297 for 8. Keshav Maharaj then produced a decisive spell of 4 for 20 to finish off Australia’s chase.
Australia began their pursuit impressively. Mitchell Marsh smashed 60 from 36 balls and Travis Head made 36 as they raced to 90 for the opening wicket. Renshaw added 44 and Connolly scored 38, leaving Australia 129 for 1 and seemingly well placed. However, the innings unravelled spectacularly as Australia lost nine wickets for 101 runs and were bowled out for 230 in 41.2 overs.
The second ODI also brings important selection developments. Inglis has been ruled out after fracturing his right index finger, opening the door for Alex Carey to resume wicketkeeping duties. Pat Cummins could also return after missing the first ODI, having played only two ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final. South Africa could strengthen their batting with Aiden Markram available again.
The Wanderers is traditionally regarded as a high-scoring venue, with clear skies expected. South Africa will aim to repeat their balanced performance with bat and ball, while Australia need to turn their promising start from the first ODI into a complete performance.
